Iodine classified as micro-mineral that is needed by the body. In the body, iodine is needed by the thyroid gland (the gland which is rather large and located in front of the lower neck). By the thyroid gland, iodine is used to produce thyroxine. Thyroxine is thehormone that regulates the activity of various organs, controlling the growth, help the process of metabolism, and even determine how long a person survive to live. If the supply of iodine in the body is very low, the thyroid gland will enlarge to form a lump in the neckwhich is usually called hypothyroid disease. Although both havepembengkak on the neck, unlike mumps hypothyroidism (goitre),which is caused by a virus.

If not treated immediately, patients with hypothyroidism will haveanemia, respiratory system weakened, patients have seizures, so that blood flow to the brain decreases until eventually heart failure. Then, what happens if our bodies excess iodine? Excess iodine inthe body known as hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism occursbecause of an overactive thyroid gland produces the hormonethyroxine. Usually marked nervous symptoms, weakness, sensitivityto heat, often sweating, hyperactivity, weight loss, appetiteincrease, fingers trembling, heart palpitations, protruding eyeballsand pulse rate increases rapidly and irregularly.

If you are suffering from hypothyroidism you should see your doctor in order to make sure that you aren’t suffering from a serious illness. If your hypothyroidism isn’t being caused by a disease then it can normally be treated with a bovine thyroid supplement .
